Bat surveys

A bat survey report is often required if you're submitting a planning application. The local council will need the report, before they can determine the application. Because bats, and their roosts, are legally protected.

We can complete bat surveys, and write the report for your planning application, within 5 days, surveys cost from £250.

PRELIMINARY ROOST APPRAISAL

A preliminary roost appraisal is a basic bat survey. It will assess the suitability of habitat, identify features which bats could use, and record any signs of use. The survey can be completed throughout the year. And will determine the level of suitability, for use by roosting bats.

If unsuitable, no further surveys will be needed. If low, moderate, or high, bat presence - absence surveys will be required.

BAT PRESENCE - ABSENCE SURVEYS

Bat presence - absence surveys are required when roosting bats are likely to be present. The surveys record bats leaving, or returning to a roost, at dusk or dawn. And will confirm the presence, or likely absence, of bats. If none are present, no further work will be needed.

The surveys can only be carried out between May and September, when bats are active.

BAT TRANSECT SURVEYS

Bat transect surveys are used to investigate the way bats use wider areas of habitat. The surveys are often used in open countryside, woodland, or larger urban sites, to determine areas of bat activity, prior to presence - absence surveys.
The surveys are completed by walking a route, recording the number and type of bats, and the areas they use.

The surveys can only be carried out when bats are active.
